POUGHKEEPSIE … Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino proudly invites residents of all abilities and their families to mark the 10th anniversary of the County’s “ThinkDIFFERENTLY” initiative with a sensory-friendly showing of the cherished holiday ballet, “The Nutcracker.” Performed by the New Paltz Ballet Theatre, this holiday classic takes place at the historic Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie on Friday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. Admission is free, but seating is limited and registration is required at dutchessny.gov/nutcracker.

Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino said, “The holidays should be a joyful time for every child and every family. Dutchess County is thrilled to once again offer a welcoming, judgment-free evening of live theater where children with disabilities and their loved ones can enjoy the magic of ‘The Nutcracker’ together. I encourage families to celebrate the season with us through this timeless performance.”

This relaxed, hour-long “no-hush” performance is designed to create a supportive and flexible environment where audience members are free to engage with the show in ways that feel comfortable to them. Adjustments to lighting and sound will be made to accommodate those with sensory sensitivities, including individuals on the autism spectrum. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and outside food and beverages are not allowed inside the venue.

For more information, residents can view the event flyer online.

Prior to the performance, at 5:30 p.m. in the Bardavon’s lobby, Dutchess County will host a brief event marking the 10th anniversary of “ThinkDIFFERENTLY,” a community-wide initiative that promotes inclusion, accessibility and respect for residents and visitors of all abilities. Since its inception in 2015, “ThinkDIFFERENTLY” has been warmly embraced by more than 100 communities throughout New York State, setting an unparalleled standard for acceptance by encouraging communities, businesses and organizations to embrace a more inclusive approach toward those with disabilities.
